Kenyan Surgeons Achieve World’s Largest Gigantomastia Surgery

A team of surgeons at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi has successfully performed what is believed to be the world’s largest gigantomastia surgery on a teenager. The 11-hour procedure, conducted on September 22, 2025, involved the removal of 20.86 kilograms (approximately 46 pounds) of breast tissue from a 17-year-old girl. This historic operation not only alleviated her physical and emotional suffering but also set a new global record for gigantomastia surgery performed on a teenager.
Gigantomastia is a rare and severe condition characterized by excessive and rapid breast growth, often due to hormonal changes, idiopathic causes or certain medications. This extreme hypertrophy can lead to debilitating symptoms such as chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, skin ulceration, postural issues and significant psychological distress. In the case of this young patient, the abnormal tissue growth made walking and standing nearly impossible, profoundly impacting her quality of life.

The surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists at KNH, under the leadership of Dr. Mukami Gathariki, a renowned expert in breast and body procedures. The operation involved precise planning and execution to ensure the patient's safety and optimal outcome. The procedure involved; Consultation & Marking: Assessment of breast anatomy and planning of incision lines, Incisions & Tissue Removal: Excision of excess skin, glandular, and fatty tissue, Reshaping & Nipple Repositioning: Sculpting a natural breast mound and relocating the nipple-areola complex and Closure & Compression: Layered suturing and application of supportive dressings to promote healing.
Following the surgery, the patient experienced significant relief from the chronic pain and physical limitations that had previously hindered her daily activities. She made a full recovery and was discharged to continue her recuperation at home in Mwingi, Kitui County. The success of the surgery has not only transformed her physical health but also restored her confidence and outlook on life.

The successful completion of this gigantomastia surgery positions Kenya as a leader in specialized healthcare in Africa. It demonstrates the country's capacity to perform complex surgeries that were previously considered beyond reach in the region. This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and skill of Kenyan medical professionals and the commitment of institutions like KNH to advancing healthcare standards.
The historic gigantomastia surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital represents a significant advancement in medical practice and patient care in Kenya. It highlights the importance of specialized surgical expertise and the potential for Kenyan healthcare institutions to lead in complex medical procedures. This achievement not only changes the life of one young girl but also sets a precedent for future medical innovations and underscores the importance of continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and training.
