Nation Mourns: State Burial Held For Raila Odinga Historic Farewell

Kenya came to a solemn standstill today as the nation bid farewell to one of its most iconic political figures, Raila Amollo Odinga, in a state funeral marked by deep emotion, national pride and reflection on a life dedicated to democracy, justice and unity. Thousands of mourners gathered at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi for the official state burial, which was attended by heads of state, dignitaries from across Africa and beyond, political leaders, religious figures and ordinary Kenyans. The event was broadcasted live across the country, allowing millions to participate in this historic moment from their homes, offices and public viewing centers.

Raila Odinga, who passed away on 15th October 2025, was more than a politician he was a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity and a relentless advocate for democratic reform. Often referred to as the “Father of Modern Democracy” in Kenya, Odinga’s political career spanned over four decades, during which he played a central role in shaping the country’s political landscape. President Ruto led the tributes, describing Odinga as “a titan of our times, whose courage and sacrifice carved the path toward a freer and more just Kenya.” “Today we bury a man, but we raise high the ideals he stood for. Raila Odinga’s dream for Kenya was one of inclusion, equity, and prosperity for all. Let his memory guide us forward,” the president said.

One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony came when the Odinga family took the stage to deliver their tribute. Ida Odinga, Raila’s widow, spoke with grace and strength, recalling their shared journey through decades of love, struggle, and political turbulence. “Raila was not only the love of my life, but the heartbeat of our family. He carried the weight of this nation on his shoulders, but never once did he allow that to dim his love for us. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather and he was ours before he was the nation’s,” she said. Raila Junior, his son, delivered the closing remarks for the family, pledging to uphold the values his father stood for: “We are not just mourning a leader; we are celebrating a legacy. And as his children, we are committed to continuing his work — with humility, courage, and an unbreakable bond with the people of Kenya.” The family’s tribute brought many in the audience to tears, a powerful reminder that beyond the towering political figure was a man deeply rooted in family, love, and humanity.

The burial ceremony began with a procession through the streets of Nairobi, where citizens lined the roads waving flags and holding portraits of Odinga. A military guard of honor escorted the body, with the Kenya Defence Forces performing a 21-gun salute in his honor. Prayers were offered by religious leaders from various faiths, reflecting the pluralistic values that Odinga often championed. Choirs from different parts of the country performed hymns and liberation songs closely associated with his life and political struggle. Representatives from across the political divide put aside partisan differences to pay tribute to a man who was often both a rival and a unifier. Former presidents, opposition leaders and long-time allies gave moving eulogies, recalling his charisma, humility and enduring fight for a better Kenya.

Following the state ceremony in Nairobi, Raila Odinga’s body will be flown to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, where a private burial will take place on Sunday and will be attended by close family and community elders. The gravesite, which is expected to become a national monument, lies beside his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, another key figure in Kenya’s independence history. The government has announced that a museum and public memorial will be established in his honor in Bondo, celebrating his legacy and educating future generations about his role in the country's democratic journey.

As the country moves forward, many Kenyans believe that honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy means continuing the work he began fighting for a more just, inclusive and united Kenya. He leaves behind a legacy not only as a political leader but also as a peacemaker, a reformer and a tireless advocate for the marginalized.
