World Bank Grants KSh 778 Million to Boost Kenya’s Transport Infrastructure Development
Kenya’s Ministry of Transport has secured a grant of KSh 778 million from the World Bank to support new infrastructure development, marking a significant boost to the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transport network and stimulate economic growth. The funding is aimed at preparing and accelerating key projects that will enhance connectivity, improve access to essential services and strengthen regional trade links.
According to the ministry, the grant will be used for feasibility studies, detailed designs, supervision work and early-stage planning of priority road and transport projects across the country. These preparatory activities are crucial for attracting larger financing needed for actual construction and long-term implementation.
A major portion of the funds will go toward improving transport corridors that link rural and semi-urban regions to major markets. The projects will focus on upgrading roads, enhancing mobility and reducing travel times, especially in areas where poor infrastructure has hindered economic activity and access to services such as healthcare, education and agricultural markets. The initiative is expected to open up remote regions, stimulate local economies.
The grant also supports digital connectivity components that will complement physical transport improvements. This includes integrating fiber optic infrastructure into new road developments to ensure underserved regions benefit from modern communication networks, a move aligned with Kenya’s push to expand digital access nationwide.
